The Real Deal A few days ago a young man posted a confession to the Class of 2016 Facebook group: I know Ive been *admitted* to MIT, but I dont know if I am actually smart enough to perform at this fabulous school with you amazing people! In the comments some of his classmates shared similar sentiments: *dislike* for not recognizing your own awesomeness, but *like* because i feel pretty much the same way 0.o I keep reading about these national scholars and competition people and Im just a guy from Arizona. lol. Not that I havent performed well or worked hard, I have. But still. :) I sort of want to email admissions and ask So thank you very much, but uh why? These comments arent fishing for compliments or falsely modest. Many students have told me over the years that after they were admitted, once the glow of joy dimmed down, there lurked in the shadows some existential unease over their admission which only intensified after they learned more about their fellow admits. Online, at CPW, and eventually after enrolling, MIT students often meet classmates so well-accomplished that they begin to question themselves, and wonder why they were among the chosen few. They begin to wonder, in other words, if they were a mistake; if they really deserved admission. To the members of the Class of 2016 who feel this way: you are incorrect. But you are not alone. See, there is a well-documented psychological phenomenon called impostor syndrome. Impostor syndrome, says Wikipedia, is a psychological phenomenon in which people are unable to internalize their accomplishments. Its extremely common in education, especially in programs with competitive admission and high achievers, and especially at graduate school  (one grad thread on a forum I frequent is subtitled Everyone Else Feels Like An Impostor Too).  This article from Science Magazine opens with an anecdote with which some of the 2016s quoted above could probably relate: When a tenured professor admitted in a panel discussion that she had felt like a fraud as a graduate student, Abigail* knew exactly what she meant. The professor told the group that she had worried that shed been let into her graduate program on a fluke and that someday shed make an error that would blow her cover. She had always believed her peers in graduate school were much smarter despite knowing that she had the best grades of the bunch. She said that she realised much later that this was completely ridiculous thinking and that obviously she was smart enough, says Abigail, a Ph.D. student in cell biology. What she said really spoke to me. Impostor syndrome is the name given to the feelings that Abigail and many other young scientists describe: Their accomplishments are just luck or deceit, and theyre in over their heads. The key to getting past it, experts say, is making accurate, realistic assessments of your performance. Perhaps equally important: knowing youre not alone. Abigail thinks that sharing her feelings with other people is how she will eventually come to grips with her sense of feeling like an impostor. Its fantastic to hear other people say, Ive felt that way, too. In some ways impostor syndrome is the mirror image of the similarly common (though much more hilariously frustrating) Dunning-Kruger effect. The Dunning-Kruger effect posits that the unskilled are unaware of it. Those who lack cognition necessarily lack the metacognitive abilities to realize it. Bluntly: stupid people are too stupid to know they are stupid. Impostor syndrome, on the other hand, strikes when exceptionally intelligent people are acutely and appropriately aware of the limits of their own expertise, but unaware that the poised people around them also have their own blind spots, their own weaknesses. I think back to a story one of the bloggers told me about coming to MIT. This blogger had been an all-star at a small, somewhat rural high school. Never had to study, always aced everything. And some of the GIRs just flat out crushed him. Chemistry was the worst, and one of his study buddies was a real whiz. Amidst his despair this blogger felt something akin to the impostor effect. But second semester, when both of them were in 8.02 the second semester of physics the blogger was acing everything, and his chem friend was barely scraping through. It then became clear: they were just playing to their respective strengths and weaknesses. This is a small and simple but demonstrative example. I actually like the fact that our students are so aware of their own limits and weaknesses. Anyone who thinks theyre going to breeze through MIT is rather dramatically mistaken. And the fact that MIT punctures these delusions like balloons early and often means that students stay appropriately grounded. When I first came to MIT having never stepped foot on campus before my interview I frankly expected the students to be, well, a bit insufferable. Prestigious institutions are particularly fertile soil for pridefulness: plant high-achieving people and shine upon them the bright light of external validation and they soon grow into towering egos. But this doesnt happen often at MIT. Its fertile soil all right, and all the nutrients are there, but your fellow students and brilliant faculty are there to provide some prudent, healthful pruning. With that said, I dont want to see any students sense of self-worth clipped to the quick. So for those who are feeling a bit impostory for those who are worried that they dont deserve this opportunity let me drop some knowledge on you: We admitted less than one in ten of the awesome people who applied to us this year. You may you will have a different distribution of talents, of skills, of interests, of experiences, than your classmates. Thats rather the point of our process. But if you were admitted, you are not an impostor. You are here because you are the genuine article. You are here because you belong at MIT. Keep your head out of the clouds but dont be afraid to hold it high.

In fact, when future generations look back and judge the civilizations and societies of the past, it is first and foremost the cultural and artistic achievements of those societies that are spoken of. To be sure, engineering and scientific achievements are a part of the picture of any society – even a major part. But whether it is Homer, Shakespeare, Mozart, Beethoven, Rembrandt, Picasso, James Baldwin, Garcia Lorca, or Leonard Bernstein – the artists and the art they created express the deepest and most profound thoughts of the civilizations in which they lived and worked. And it is the achievements of those artists that, in fact, define civilizations, define humanity. And if we aren’t educating our young people to the standards of those achievements, how can we in fact call it education? So then the question is how can we find common ground – common ground occupied by you in the world of music educators and us in the world of symphony orchestras – to work together to enhance the state of music education in the school systems of America? And that is what I’d like to speak about today. We have actually done much together – some things that all of you might not be aware of. Throughout 2006, the American Symphony Orchestra League led a coalition effort, including collaboration with MENC, to develop a national unified statement regarding the benefits of arts education. This paper is being used on the Hill in Washington this year as an advocacy tool for communicating the benefits of arts education to federal lawmakers as they begin the process of re-authorizing the No Child Left Behind Act. This re-authorization process will be a multi-year effort and has already begun with public and private hearings and town hall meetings. The messages outlined in Arts Education: Creating Student Success in School Work and Life directly communicate the benefits of arts education to policymakers. More than 60 organizations are signatories on this unified statement – and they represent an impressive cross-section of stakeholders in federal education policy. Here is a brief sample of the kind of statement included in that document: A child’s education is not complete unless it includes the arts. In fact, the No Child Left Behind Act lists the arts among the core academic subjects, requiring schools to enable all students to achieve in the arts, and to reap the full benefits of a comprehensive arts education. In spite of this federal direction, access to arts education in our schools is eroding. A report from the Center for Education Policy conclude that, since the enactment of No Child Left Behind, 22% of school districts surveyed have reduced instructional time for art and music†¦. A comprehensive strategy for a complete education includes rigorous, sequential arts instruction in the classroom, as well as participation and learning in available community-based arts programs. Public schools have the responsibility for providing a complete education for all children, meeting the commitment put forth in No Child Left Behind. The federal commitment to arts education must be strengthened so that the arts are implemented as a part of the core curriculum of our nation’s schools and are an integral part of every child’s development. So clearly one way in which we already work together is to collaborate on advocacy, to sound the alarm together, and to lead our society back to a place where arts education is indeed central to education curricula, and not an add-on, or an â€Å"extra frill† to be indulged if there happens to be money left in a budget or time left in a schedule. Another area in which we can work together is to insist on, and help to bring about, meaningful, comprehensive research on the status and quality of arts education in our nation’s schools, and on the impact of arts education on future citizens. Even some of those things that people like to call â€Å"un-measurable,† are, in fact, measurable if you care enough to find the metrics with which to measure them. We know that arts education improves problem-solving abilities, and we know that in particular music education – particularly making music – develops skills in working together with others for a common result in a way that virtually nothing else can. We know it anecdotally, we know it instinctively, we know it deep within our gut. And best of all we know that there is some hard data that can document this. The American Symphony Orchestra League has compiled highlights from this research in our Music Education Advocacy Tools, available at our website. Much of the best evidence is drawn from Arts Education Partnership reports, including Critical Links: Learning in the Arts and Student Academic and Social Development. Nonetheless, we can, and we must, lead to more research that provides even more evidence of the benefits of music education. We can probably do a better job together than we have in collecting, analyzing, and reporting on the considerable data that already exists, as well as bringing about more research. The most urgent need, however, is for good information about the true state of arts education in our schools. We currently are forced to rely on anecdote and spare data to illustrate the music education is being squeezed out as increased attention is given to math, reading, and science. How much arts education is being delivered to our nation’s students, and how are they learning the arts? The U. S. Department of Education has the tools and the responsibility to collect this data, but simply has not made it a priority to do so. A report on the status of arts education is more than two years overdue – this at a time when policymakers are contemplating major changes to the way the federal government supports our public schools. The League is partnering with MENC to urge Congress to compel the U. S. Department of Education to collect this data. Sound information about the status of music education is a crucial underpinning to advocacy efforts at the community level as well. At the state and local levels, orchestras and music educators can partner effectively to advocate for better data in this area. We at the American Symphony Orchestra League are heavily involved with orchestras’ education and community programs, and with youth orchestras throughout America. But we also know and fully appreciate that orchestra programs are not a substitute for professional music teachers in our school systems. The programs that our field operates must, to be effective, work in cooperation and conjunction with in-school programs taught by school-based music teachers. That is the key to meaningful music education. We can be key partners in augmenting and enriching school programs, but we must be seen as supporters of, advocates for, and contributors to, multi-year, sustained, sequential, school-based programs. We are not substitutes for that. There are many orchestras that have deeply embedded partnerships with their local school systems – in communities of all sizes, from New York, Boston San Francisco and Saint Louis, to Mobile, and Kalamazoo. The same is true of community cultural organizations. Youth orchestras and community music schools are part of the fabric of the arts-education community. All have a role to play, but that role is in the context of the main school being at the center. The ideal for a child participating in a community orchestra, or studying at a community music school, is that he or she was inspired to do so because the exposure to and love for music was introduced and sustained in school. These other resources are extensions. In the ideal, these out-of-school opportunities cannot occur only by virtue of family interest, resources, or priorities. We at the League celebrate the growth and vitality of our youth orchestras†¦. full of the energetic, bright, high-achieving young people whom we know are not only the musicians of tomorrow, but also the next generation of teachers, school board members, parents, civic leaders, audience members and arts-education advocates. At the same time, we wonder if this segment of our sector is growing in part because, for the families that value music education the inconsistent presence of strong, sequential school-based music programs is not meeting their expectations for their children. We need strong resources – in school and out of school. Youth orchestras should be supplementing musical experiences in our nation’s schools, not replacing them. Part of the problem that we all face is that much of what we know about the value of the arts, and music in particular, is not easily reduced to numbers, to quantities. And our world is full of people, many of them in positions of power, who love the simplicity of numbers, the black-and-white nature of numbers. When one tries to discuss the humanizing qualities of music to people like that, one is often flummoxed, because they want graphs and charts. â€Å"What do you mean,† they’ll say, â€Å"by music’s power to bridge chasms in human understanding? Document it, please! † Well†¦ I can’t document it with graphs – but every year of my life spent in music makes me more certain of that quality in music. And exhibit A for me is not a chart – it is an orchestra, a very specific orchestra. Many of you may know of it – some of you perhaps don’t. It’s called the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, and it is now in its seventh year of existence. Founded by Daniel Barenboim, it consists of Arabs, Palestinians, and Israeli Jews – and every year for three or four weeks they live together, eat together, rehearse and perform together. My wife and I were a part of that orchestra from the beginning – and that first year was an experience I shall never forget. Daniel Barenboim, and Yo-Yo Ma working with him, assembled this group of young musicians, ages 17-25, and brought them together in Weimar, Germany. In addition to forming an orchestra, Barenboim and Ma invited them to form chamber music groups which they, Barenboim and Ma, would coach in preparation for a chamber music concert to take place the night before the orchestra concert. There was only one rule – no all Jewish chamber group, and no all Arab/Palestinian group. The resulting chamber music concert was 3 ? ours long – and each group only played one movement, not whole pieces – or it would have gone on forever. To sit there and watch, for instance, a movement from a Brahms Clarinet trio, played by an Egyptian, a, Syrian, and an Israeli was one of the most moving experiences of my life – to see these kids working out musical problems together, leaning into each others’ phrases, and embracing each other while receiving applause – this was a ll the charting and graphing I will ever need to demonstrate what it is that music can do that nothing else can. We know this – you and I and those who are in our fields know this. The question is how can we work together to help the rest of the world to know it – and to get the value, the human value of this art form across to those who determine what we teach our future citizens? I don’t know the answer to that question. But I do know, in our increasingly troubled world with an ever greater need for human understanding across national and religious and cultural lines, the intrinsic value of the art form we all love is more needed than ever. You and we – you who teach music and we who organize into groups that perform it – must work together with renewed energy and vigor to imprint on our society the value, the centrality, of music. America’s orchestras are committed to advocating for better music education in our nation’s schools. Starting from the tradition of stand-alone school concerts and family concerts, orchestras now offer small ensemble performance, residencies, long term partnerships, after-school and summer camps, instrumental instruction and a host of other activities. Inherent in most of these programs are deeply embedded partnerships with local school systems, and responsiveness to local, state, and national arts and academic standards. While these programs provide an opportunity for young people to develop a lifelong relationship with music and the orchestra, none of these is capable of replacing an ongoing sequential K-12 music education. While a comprehensive strategy for music education includes participation and learning in orchestra education programs, schools have the unique capacity to deliver high-quality music education. Edward Elgar set a poem by Arthur O’Shaughnessy in 1912 – it is called The Music Makers. I quote it here for you because it seems so central to what we are all about. â€Å"You shall teach us your song’s new numbers, and things that we dreamed not before: Bring hither your sun and your summers, and renew our world of yore. We are the music makers. And we are the dreamers of dreams. † Thank you. Beautifully said! I wonder if, in the course of gathering data about the current state of music education in public schools, there is any way to compare it with public schools of decades ago. The fact that 22% of districts have reduced art and music instructional time since the enactment of No Child Left Behind is disturbing — but it’s also a comparison that may not hit home for legislators, because they were already long out of school when the baseline of that comparison was happening. On the other hand, a comparison of (say) instructional time, class sizes, curricula, and student participation rates between the present and (pick a year in each of) the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, might really bring home to legislators that things today are not as they remember them from their own school days. It might show how far we’ve gone, in the same way that losing a tiny percentage of forest a year doesn’t feel like much, but hearing that a region has lost half its tree cover since 1950 can be a real eye-opener. SECTION 1 WATER CRISIS IN GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE Water crisis is a term used for shortage of water resources in global perspective. The term is used for worldwide water scarcity by the United Nations and Other world organizations like Food and Agriculture Organization. The major aspects of the water crisis are the overall scarcity of water worldwide and increase of water pollution due to man created cast atrophic environment like industrial waste, chemical wastes, nuclear and biological pollutants etc. Which are dump in the oceans, rivers and on the surface or underground thus directly polluting the fresh water natural reservoirs. The developing world, as a whole, faces water scarcity more than the developed world (World Water Commission, 2000), Lawrence Smith, the president of the population institute, asserts that although an overwhelming majority of the planet is composed of water, of this water is constituted to saltwater; with only as thwarter used to sustain humans. Therefore, Smith believes that the competition for water in an overpopulated world would pose a major threat to human stability; world wars may be fought over the control of water resources, It has been estimated that some AS per cent of the worlds population live in regions facing water-stress: by 2025 it will increase to AS per cent (Henries et al. I egg cited in Bib, 2004). The Earth as a limited supply of fresh avatar, stored in aquifers, surface waters and the atmosphere. About 884 million people access to safe drinking water and water for sanitation and waste disposal for 2. 5 billion people is not enough. Pollution and overuse Of water resources is is bound to harm biodiversity. Waterborne diseases and non-availability of clean domestic water are one of the leading causes Of death worldwide. Drought increases the problem Of safe water supply, but it is the imprudent actions of humans that have rendered the human population vulnerable to the devastation of major droughts. Water is the only source that cannot be generated, it can only be preserved. Farsighted nations are conserving water because of the awareness that if this commodity is not prudently preserved, the human survival itself would be jeopardized. 1. UN Report 2006 on Global water Crisis A 2006 united Nations report focuses on the issue of water crisis stating is enough water for everyone, and Water insufficiency is often due to corruption, mismanagement, lack of appropriate institutions, bureaucratic inertia and a shortage to investment in both human capacity and physical infrastructure, Official data also shows a clear correlation between access to fee water and GAP per capita. Water shortages, are already causing heavy grain imports in many smaller and third world countries.. The water tables are falling in scores of countries due to widespread over pumping and droughts. The affected countries include Pakistan, Iran, and Mexico. This state of affairs will eventually lead to water scarcity and decrease in grain harvest. If the population growth is not slowed down quickly it is feared that there may not be a practical solution to the emerging world water shortage. According to CINE report on world climate, the Himalayan glaciers that produces and are the sources of Saiss biggest rivers Ganges, Indus, Apparatus, Yanking, Mekong, Salesmen and Yellow could disappear by 2350. Approximately 2. 4 billion people who live in the drainage basin of the Himalayan Rivers which include people living in Pakistan India, China, Nepal, Manner and Bangladesh can suffer from floods followed by droughts in the coming decades. 1. 2 World Climatic Changes effects on Water Crisis. Which is nothing unexpected. The manner in which we have handled our natural resources and national affairs, this catastrophic occurrence was bound to come. The capacity of present reservoirs and dams is insufficient as well because silt was decreasing their storage capacity and it was the main Obligation of the Government to construct maximum number of dams in order to save water not only for the sake Of producing energy but also saving agriculture sector of the country. 2. 2 World Bank and Asian Development Bank Reports The World Bank (WEB) and Asian Development Bank (DAB) has declared Pakistan as one of the most Water stressed countries in the world and has predicted that it shall face an acute water shortage over the next S years due to shortage of water availability for irrigation, industry and human use. The WEB report further states that water supply in Pakistan has fallen from 5,000 cubic meters per capita to 11000 cubic meters in 2010, and is likely to further go down to 800 cubic meters per capita by 2020. The factors which are contributing to the shortage are increase in population, Climate change, No solid vision to construct water services, use of Shells and Chance rivers by India under the Indus Water Treaty (TWIT) of 1960 which has reduced the flow of water in Pakistan. 2. Reasons tort Water Crisis in Pakistan The water crisis in Pakistan exists due to the following reasons: a) The leadership of Pakistan could not develop a consensus on the construction of large water reservoir, particu larly the Calabash dam that would have dealt with water crisis which we are facing today. B) The Pakistani nation is divided and nearly every province is in dispute over the share of beater under the TWIT especially over the utilizing the water for Karri and Rabbi seasons through ink canals managed by the Indus River System Authority (IRIS). Water wastage and land destruction caused due to seepage of canals, water courses, rivers etc, g) Old antiquated and traditional techniques of irrigation lead to excessive loss of water. H) The Water Treaty between India and Pakistan know as Indus Water Treaty has contributed a lot to the water crisis in the Country. 2. 4 Flooding due to Non Controlling to River Indus through Dams. The absence of policies of conserving and storing water has resulted in keeping the Indus open to flooding. Ala Khan an expert in water management has described the recent flooding in Pakistan as follows. *The worst monsoon-related floods in recent memory are the words used by LINE for the recent historical floods in Pakistan The River Indus or also known as Kinds River, once gave life to the cradle of history earliest civilizations, devastated the same land to which it gave birth. The force of the floods has washed away some of the ancient remains that reminded us the history of the Indus basin dating back to thousands of years. The heavy toll of life both in terms of human, animals and wild life was another catastrophic disaster. Approximately 12 percent of the entire population which is more than 12 million people suffered and are still suffering from the historical floods. Some 160,000 square kilometers which is 20 % of Pakistanis total landmass, has inundated. More than 10 hundred homes have been destroyed or badly damaged. Some 50 million acres of the agriculture land had standing crops out Of Which, more than 10 million acres Of the standing crops, mainly sugarcane and cotton the cash crops of the country, have been destroyed or severely damage. Mr.. Ala Khan further states that apart from global warning, the woo main factors for this unmitigated disaster were the fragile infrastructure and drastic deforestation. Due to unplanned cutting of forests it has reduced from 28 percent of Pakistan territory in 1947 to 2. 3 percent today. After the worst flood (2010) in Pakistan, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Wausau Razz Gillian, confessed that the devastation of flood would be less if Calabash dam was built. 2. 4. 1 Drought in Pakistan There was a severe drought which hit Pakistan from 1997 to 2002 due to a phenomenon also known as the Liana effect which resulted in stoppage of rains ND drought thus exposing our country to its wrath due to reduced storage capacity of water reservoirs. Water supplies are falling globally whereas the demand for water is increasing continuously at an unsustainable rate. This increasing in demand of water resources shows that the average supply fatter worldwide per person is expected to drop by a third over the next 20 years, At Present, many countries are already in a state of crises. As Pakistan is also the part of the world and unfortunately a developing country, is facing the same problems of water deficiency, like the rest of the world. The developed countries, contrary to Pakistan, are continuously putting in action short-term and long-term water development policies and implementing various techniques, to overcome these crises. Pakistan could only built 2 big reservoirs over the last 60 years Which is an unfortunate for the country in the short and long run. 2. 4. 2 Water Crisis has resulted in Energy Crisis. Due to shortage of water and bad planning besides a number of other reasons the Government has resorted to other methods of getting energy which has created a severe shortage of energy coupled with expensive electricity which as literally destroyed our industry and has send the country into a spiral of economical turmoil which may take years to recover from plunging our country into the dark ages to backwardness whereas on the other hand nearly all our neighbors minus Afghanistan which has been torn why decades of insurgencies and wars have crossed into the 21st century whereas we are lagging behind waiting for some miracle, Conversion from a cheap source of hydro electricity i. E dams to an expensive source of thermal power has caused the country great economic problems. The figure below shall give a complete picture of the ramification of Pakistan electricity requirement from a cheap source to a very expensive source thus heavily burdening our already fragile economy. 2. Indus Wate r Treaty in the Historical Perspective. With creation of Pakistan India controlled 3 of the 5 Rivers of Punjab which stopped the water supply to our canals feeding the eastern districts of the United Punjab and the Plural State. This arbitrary action ruined our part of Punjabi cultivated land. This adversely affected the economy Of Pakistan and famine loomed over the country this forced us to mobile our resources. The search or alternate arrangements to sustain our mainly agrarian economy started. The construction of small dams on our rivers like Warsaw on Kabul and Aortas on Shells were taken up With the help Of Commonwealth nations. In pursuance of Pakistanis manipulation of water resources policy in 1960 a treaty between Pakistan and India was signed which was mediated with help of World Bank. This treaty is widely known as the Indus Basin Treaty. 2. 5. 1 Salient Features of Indus Water Treaty: 1. Three eastern rivers, Rave, Settle and Baas to given over to India with some minor rights to Pakistan. 2. Three of the western rivers namely Indus, Chance and Shells remained with Pakistan. 3. Under the treaty allowed to use water trot the western rivers tort irrigation purpose. India was already irrigating 642,000 acres of land from these rivers however it was given entitlement to irrigate another 701 ,OHO acres of agriculture land. 4. Entitlement for some storage for the purpose of power and flood controls was also given to India, S, Pakistanis requirement was to be fulfilled through construction of replacement works from the western rivers to replacing the canals from eastern rivers, 6, The treaty provided for regular exchange flow data of rivers, canals and streams in each other territory. 7 _ An Indus Water Commission, with one Commissioner from each side, was to be set up to resolve issues. 8. Set procedures were spelt out to settle Questions Differences and Disputes between the two countries through Neutral Experts and International Court of Arbitration. 9. As Pakistan needed time to build the required infrastructure India was to allow the Historic Withdrawals during the transitory period. 0. For the two large multipurpose dams on Indus and Jelled Pakistan proposed sites at Calabash and Aortas Mangle),later the Dam site was changed to Travel instead of Calabash. It also decided to make barrages like Sideman o n River Rave, Moral and Quadrant on River Chance, Chasm on River Indus, Ursula on River Shells, and Mails on River Settle. A Siphon and 7 link canals (Ursula. Quadrant on Rivers Shells and Chance, QuadrantBalloon on Rivers Chance and Rave, Balloon-Salesmans II and Sideman-Mails on Rivers Rave and Settle, Chasm-Shells on Rivers Indus and Shells, Tritium-Sideman on Rivers Indus and Rave to be constructed in Pakistan.
